COLORAs I delve deeper into photography as an art, I find myself studying more about color hoping to use them intentionally as part of composition. I came across a wonderful book, Color Workbook by Becky Koenig.

One thing I learned today from reading the book is the distinction between hue and color. All this time, I've been using the terms interchangeably but, I found out, there is actually a difference.

Hue "is either a specific wavelength from the spectrum or a color, in its pure state, from the color circle."

Color "means a color derived from any hue." "Unlike a hue, a color is not necessarily chromatically pure."

Example: Violet is a hue, Light Violet is a color.

As the saying goes... you learn something new everyday.
This is why Joe is one of my heroes... he advocates simplicity. On this video, he emphasizes "lighting well, lighting fast, staying mobile, not carrying lots of gear". This pretty much applies to anything we do in the course of our lives.

I agree, everyone needs some rejection once in a while... but it also depends on who's giving it. Is it from someone you truly respect? Is it coming from some troll who doesn't have anything better to do? Is it from someone who will always disagree just because?

Either way, we have the final say on how we accept rejection. We can go the path of surrender, shrinking into the eternal darkness of inaction and self-pity, OR we can treat it as the catalyst to light a fire in our bellies, make the necessary course corrections and forge ahead.
For people planning or just starting out with photography as a business, one of the big item questions is what to charge or how much?

For the answer we turn to the pros who are actually making a living doing what they love.

Just came across Zack Arias "Photography Q&A on tumblr, where a follower asked what's included in Zach's day rate.

His response:

My “day rate” or sometimes I refer to it as a “creative fee” typically includes my time and minor post production. By minor I mean color corrections, contrast, removal of dust spots, etc. It usually includes basic travel if it’s within the city of Atlanta where I’m based. Assistants, crew, gear rental (if needed), heavier post production, mileage or travel costs, etc are then added as line items in addition to my day rate.

The time I need for post is typically part of that “day rate”.

Oh… usage is another line item. Usage isn’t typically included in my rate.

That's valuable information.
Why would people spend money on a professional photographer when, nowadays, everyone's a photographer? Here's why... in the words of Genevieve Lauren Burruss:

"Photography is a luxury item in our world, not a necessity, and so for many people the money they invest in hiring a photographer to capture their family portrait, their new baby, their engagement, their 50th birthday party, or their wedding, is precious. As a photographer you are responsible for telling that families story in a way that preserves the joy in their lives for all future generations to come..." - Genevieve Lauren Burruss, The Way We Click Photography

I may have taken the quote out of context (it is from her Open Letter To A Thief)... but the message in these few sentences just resonates with me. It serves as an inspiration to pursue the craft. Make mistakes and learn from them. Improve and strive to set myself apart from the "good enough" crowd so that I can stand behind my product and paying clients can have the peace of mind that the money they spent on a luxury item was money well spent.Mariohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07196114213111641457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8957444415319303898.post-31803525266197109282013-04-24T23:17:00.002-04:002013-04-24T23:18:58.359-04:00100 Strangers Project: 5/100 - Adrienne, Manager / Flower Expert

Meet Adrienne, manager at Lowe's Bayshore Nursery and Garden Center and flower expert... I guess it's required with the job.

I've met Adrienne a couple of years back when I bought loads and loads of river rocks. I wasn't into serious photography back then. I was merely a customer and since I wasn't a regular I never really had a chance to get to know her.

Then I decided to photograph some flowers. The nursery was conveniently located in our community. After a brief introduction, Adrienne told me I was welcome to take as much photos as I'd like. Actually the photo above was taken a week after my initial visit. I told her about my 100 Strangers project and she agreed to have her photo taken.

One thing I can say about this project is that I'm really getting the hang of it. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. So far I'm 5 out of 5 giving me the impression that people are more approving if you show that you are genuinely interested and simply ask nicely. I hope my luck continues.

Thanks Adrienne!
When I want to photograph flowers I used to think of driving to a botanical garden. But sometimes when I think about driving, especially on a weekend, I think, "no way".

Then it occurred to me, there's a place about a couple of blocks from my house... our local nursery. And that's what I did the other weekend. After doing some errands, my daughter and I stopped by Lowe's Bayshore Nursery and Garden Center.
Of course, I didn't just walk in and started shooting away to my heart's content. After all it's a business and there were other customers. I asked permission from the manager, Adrienne (who is also going to be my 5 of 100 for my 100 Strangers Project, coming up next).

One thing worth noting is the workflow process of developing a concept, seeing the end result even before you click the shutter button, pre-planning to determine the logistics that will help you get toward achieving the image, and having a lighting plan, setting up on the day of the shoot and finally the execution.
Permission one granted. Next was to ask the business owner if I could use the premises for photo shoots.

Meet Hube (pronounced Hyoo-Bee), owner of Lowe's Automotive in Stevensville, MD.

4/100 - Hube, business owner

When I asked him for the photograph he was fine with it but he remarked that he doesn't really look good in photos... I beg to differ. He has very expressive eyes. In fact, I thought he was an ideal subject so I took a few more shots.

4/100 - Hube, business owner

I asked Hube to step out a bit forward from the shade so I could use the sun as a nice backlight.

4/100 - Hube, business owner

His business covers used car sales, auto detailing (although while I was there, they were also giving some TLC on a big boat), but the most interesting part of his business is that Hube restores some classic cars. He took me inside his workshop to show me some works in progress. That explains some of the old classics sitting outside.

Hube's a cool guy. So cool he even told me that we can work on shooting his finished cars one of these days. I think it will be an awesome experience.

Thanks Hube for giving me the opportunity and I'm looking forward to working with you in the future.Mariohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07196114213111641457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8957444415319303898.post-50055024441027864832013-04-14T01:10:00.003-04:002013-04-14T01:23:38.311-04:00100 Strangers Project: 3/100 - Kevin, Graffiti ArtistAlmost on a daily basis I pass by an automotive building wrapped in graffiti artwork. I think it would serve as a great background for outdoor portraits and I always tell myself that one of these days I'll drop by and take a closer look but never do... until today.

And the timing couldn't have been any better. As I pulled in to the lot, I see the guy responsible for all the art working on fresh graffiti.
Meet Kevin, graffiti artist. I asked him about his current work and he told me this one wasn't hired work but the owner lets him use the building as his canvas. He declined to have a headshot taken but preferred one in action.

He was more than eager to direct me to the rest of the building to capture his previous work.
It was still a chilly afternoon but my daughter wanted to play outside on the walkway and she wanted me to stay out with her. So I thought, why not take this opportunity to break out my macro setup and re-familiarize myself with my go-to settings in preparation to my "macro open season".

My Set Up

I don't own a macro lens, instead I use my favorite old Nikkor 35-70mm, f3.3-4.5 that has a macro focus setting. Then I attach it to the business end of two to three nikon extension tubes.
I also employ the help of my trusty SB-20 speedlights when the lighting situation calls for it. Also, on-camera flash is out of the question given the extension tubes plus lens is quite long. I overcome thatby using wireless remote triggers so I can place the flash anywhere I want.

Challenges

The thing with this set up is not having the ability to focus from a distance, which is important for skittish bugs. The front of the lens is usually around two to three inches away from the subject. One solution I've read online is to capture the bugs and put them in the fridge to slow them down, or find dead ones. Well, I don't want to put bugs in my fridge and dead ones, in most cases, don't look appealing.

Another challenge is not having auto focus. I set the camera body focus switch to manual, then turn the lens focus ring all the way to macro (M). Then I physically move the camera forward and back until I get a clear focus in my viewfinder. This can also be made easier with a focusing rail, which I don't have so for now I am relying on my super steady hands and high capacity lungs that allow me to be as still as a rock. OK, not really... with this set up it's mostly patience and luck.

Settings

I haven't taken any macro since August of last year so I need to re-familiarize myself to my ideal settings so I don't have to fiddle with it when it starts to get warmer and my backyard comes to life.

First I tried to shoot blades of grass but at this magnification level, which can be more than life-size (ranging from 1:1.2 to 1:1.7 depending on my zoom setting), the slightest breeze translated to excessive movement resulting in a blurred shot. I moved on to more stationary subjects. I'll deal with more challenging subjects in the future. Today was about finding my ideal settings.

The settings are listed in the captions. The f-stops are based on the lens markings and not the equivalent f-stop as an effect of the extension. I just know that I lose several stops of light the farther I place the lens from the body. f/11 might as well be equivalent to f/32 or more. I really haven't done the calculation.
Further in my backyard there is a long piece of 4 x 4 wood covered in moss so I went over to investigate.
Talk about crash and burn. So this year, however late, I decided to do a reboot, starting with...

The Mystery People In The Conference Room

Joanne is a contractor working on "stuff" for a department where I work. I approached her the day before and asked her if she would be interested in having her photo taken for my 100 Strangers project. She said she would think about it. I thought she was politely saying NO. My project was off to a bad start. But later she came to my desk and told me we could do it the next day during lunch break. I was so excited.

The conference room had three big windows so I pulled up the blinds on one and we shot in natural light.
If you're thinking about taking your hobby to the next level and you are the reading type, check out Photoshelter.com's free guides to the Photography Business. You get the guides by providing your email. The only minor suggestion I would give is for them to have a "cart" instead of entering your email for each selection you make... but it's not a big deal. Hey, it's FREE!
Once you're done selecting your favorite guides, scroll further down to the bottom to see a treasure trove of educational content covering a wide range of topics. Enjoy!

Jared walks you through his Silvertide concert shoot. To me, it's a great insight on what goes inside Jared's mind while covering the event. More importantly, you could apply these ideas, concepts, whatever you'd like to call it, to other events whether you're taking detail shots or the people attending.
