I realized I needed to move up when I felt my compact point-and-shoot wasn't doing it for me anymore. I have been using more and more of the "manual" mode, and wishing I had further control over aperture and/or shutter speed. It was high time to get me one of those DSLR's. Problem was, I didn't have enough money to buy one.
I've been saving for a used Canon Rebel Xsi. Then a co-worker came to me with a Nikon D50 in hand. He just upgraded to a D5100 and wondered if I was interested in buying his old D50 for $300... and he wasn't in a hurry to get paid.
I thought, uhm, a Nikon... but okay, "I'll take it for a spin and see if I'm gonna like it". First photo I took was a pen holder sitting on the dining table. I was hooked! Had to have it!
About 300 shots later (in a couple of months) the D50 crapped out. My friend felt bad so he purchased a D80 to replace it and just added $75 on my tab. I was whole again.
Since then I have been reading and researching almost everything on photography. There's so much information available and a lot of seasoned photographers sharing their knowledge online.
For me, one way to retain new information is to write it down... in my case, an online "notebook", making it available anytime, anywhere, and having the ability to share it with the rest of the world.
Yep, it's just another photography blog.
