Forever Etched In Memory

Today I was driving home, Eastbound on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge around 6:30pm-ish and i saw in my rear view mirror, an awesome red-golden glow of the setting sun just touching the Chesapeake Bay horizon with dramatic clouds and "God-rays" shooting skywards... if it wasn't illegal to stop in the middle of the bridge I would've done it and probably come home smiling from ear to ear.

THE PHOTO OF THAT AWESOME SUNSET WOULD'VE BEEN HERE :(

The scene is forever etched in my memory and you won't see it until technology catches up where digital  images can be downloaded directly from our brains.

Photography Lesson from a Five-Year-Old

Went out for a walk today with my 5-year old daughter in Terrapin Nature Park. I handed her a point-and-shoot camera as I always do when we go out for walks.

RAW or JPEG?

When I got my DSLR, I was faced with the same dilemma many new owners of cameras capable of switching between formats have encountered... should I shoot RAW or JPEG?

I will not explain what RAW or JPEG is since the web is already awash with information on the topic and there's really nothing new that I can add. Just go ahead and Google it. But I want to share my solution to the question. After a few months of playing around I decided to use both formats depending on the shooting situation.

JUST ANOTHER PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG

I realized I needed to move up when I felt my compact point-and-shoot wasn't doing it for me anymore. I have been using more and more of the "manual" mode, and wishing I had further control over aperture and/or shutter speed. It was high time to get me one of those DSLR's. Problem was, I didn't have enough money to buy one.

I've been saving for a used Canon Rebel Xsi. Then a co-worker came to me with a Nikon D50 in hand. He just upgraded to a D5100 and wondered if I was interested in buying his old D50 for $300... and he wasn't in a hurry to get paid.

I thought, uhm, a Nikon... but okay, "I'll take it for a spin and see if I'm gonna like it". First photo I took was a pen holder sitting on the dining table. I was hooked! Had to have it!

About 300 shots later (in a couple of months) the D50 crapped out. My friend felt bad so he purchased a D80 to replace it and just added $75 on my tab. I was whole again.

Since then I have been reading and researching almost everything on photography. There's so much information available and a lot of seasoned photographers sharing their knowledge online.

For me, one way to retain new information is to write it down... in my case, an online "notebook", making it available anytime, anywhere, and having the ability to share it with the rest of the world.

Yep, it's just another photography blog.
