Family Portrait Session: The C's

Last February, I did a photo session with the family I shall call the C's for privacy reasons.

This March, I had another opportunity with them. This time around we did headshots and solo portraits with two costume changes.. I am practicing as a mobile photographer so, naturally, we did the shoot in the comfort of their home.

I had a very simple setup... two mic stands to hold a 5'x7' moving blanket backdrop, one SB-20 speedlight in a soft box for main light, and a white poster board held on a boom stand for my reflector. I used an old Nikkor 35-70mm and set my camera to manual at ISO 100, 1/160s and played the aperture between f/7.1 and f/8. The flash was set at 1/4 power. The guide number calculation put the flash at 5 to 6 feet from the subject but I positioned it to about 2 to 3 feet to compensate for the loss of light due to the soft box. The entire shoot was done in the dining area.

The first segment were headshots and portraits in casual attire.

I'm really liking the effect of the soft box, which simulates light coming from a square window.

On the next segment the C's showed their love for sports, both as fans and as players. Here are some of my favorite shots.

I still need to improve and expand on my posing techniques. Thankfully, Meredith came up with cool ones. It really helps if your subject's got game :)

All in all it was a fun 1.5 hour session. I'm also happy that my exposures were pretty much spot on without using a meter (though I would like to have one eventually). Having good exposures meant less time at post.

Thank you C's for the opportunity to capture a few moments of your beautiful family..
